My Pefkos and local elections at Maria Apartments Pefkos
Other news from Maria Apartments Pefkos is that over the next two weekends we will have the local, regional and european elections. Election day in Greece is always on a Sunday (this year 18th and 25th). Television, internet and coffee shops are full of talk as to who will do what, who did what and more importantly what didn’t happen over the past 4 years that was supposed to. It has been a difficult 4 years for all local municipalities in Greece and with all the austerity imposed by the Troika (European bank, IMF and government) cutbacks local authorities have had to reduce their spending which has inevitably resulted in service cutbacks.
This has affected us in Pefkos in that street lights were not replaced, road markings could not be renewed and generally things were getting that’ uncared for ‘look. However, several of the local business people got together and formed My Pefkos, which apart from promoting the village with maps, signs and other things they also set about organising the repainting of street marking, street lights, walls and replacing the light bulbs in the street lights. My Pefkos is funded by the local businesses of Pefkos and advertising on the website.
This summer visitors will notice several new wooden swing signs giving directions and location. The new signs are written in English and Greek, and have been provided by My Pefkos.
We are told by the media that Greece is now coming out of the recession and we therefore wish that this summer is a good one for everyone in business and also those who come here on their holidays.
As the election weekends are almost upon us we wish all those standing as candidates for election to the council good luck and may the best men/women win!
